re wire?

Post by meehaja »

My dash is full of crazy wiring, no repeaters for indicators/ hazards don't work, no dash lights, no main beam warning lamp (is this an mot issue?) no horn, radio has stopped working and many other crisis's! How hard is a rewire for a complete novice, and next question, is it possible to use a dash/ wiring from a watercooled motor? I have an A/C 2.0 and am finding spares hard to get hold of! The garage I use can bodge it upto MOT standard, but would prefer to do a tidy job with decent parts! However, he says he's never tried using later bits.

Hi,

With all these problmes it sounds more like an earth issue than anything else (as it is the only thing common to all parts that have stopped working). I'm not sure that its the same for the Aircooled (I'm sure someone will say if not!) but on the watercooled there is an earth crown on the left 'A' pillar, beside the fuse box.

If you take all the leads off this, and give the whole assembly a good polish and pop the connectors back on, you might find stuff starts working again!

Worth a punt before embarking on a full rewire! :D

Cheers,

Alex

Thanks, I'll have a look at that, i did wonder if it would be something small, given that so many things didn't work, I'm hoping for a steep learning curve, given that I'm prone to getting electrocuted on a regular basis!

Its all up the creek and needs a new membrane imo, you'll see some of the copper ends are knackered/missing. I got it through the MOT but it stopped working soon after. You need to remember that the wires have been chopped before i got it, so some of the colours at connector are not the actual wire colours just chase them back 4 inches or so to see what they really are. The wires in connectors are almost certainly in wong order. Use the link below to arrange the wires in the correct order, only one i had working with the original setup was main beam switch. Then hardwired voltage reg in to keep eye on fuel level so you could get home without running out/guessing.

If you read the above link it talks you through putting later clocks on early vans, which is what i would do if i couldn't get hold of a Aircooled membrane, give that to your guy and set him to it! i had all the info just no time.

Earthing sounds highly likely - remove the glove box and unscrew the fuse holder from the van - you should see a castleated earthing ring screwed to the vertical body with anything upto 10 BROWN earth wires going to it - these are all the earths for many of the vans circuits

T25's are renowned for the front windscreen leaking water straight onto this area causing rusting the steel and stopping the earth ring...earthing :ok

Cheers for the help guys, I' sure I'll get it sorted, I'm weirdly confident that I can do this myself, armed with the great advice of "start with things that don't work, they can't not work any less" and going up.
