Very interesting...go and get a 2.5 manual Legacy with low range option and pop the whole lot in a syncro?
Three proper diffs and no more vc worries Might have to watch it with the front/rear torque split
I note that they're not offering a reversed gearshift just yet

have you seen the price for fitting an engine ,and there paying. 4g+

interesting to see the difference in price as you wont need a bellhousing , flywheel , internal gear upgrade due to wrong ratios ect ect!

You're already there
If you're going subaru you need an exhaust (£400-600) but you need one anyway, engine wiring loom, speedo recalibrate, Cable gearshift (£300) the list goes on. But nobody said that it was a cheap upgrade
But less work for Aidan - you'll only need uprated diesel gearsets soon

Ok. Combine the reverse cwp with a 4wd Legacy gearbox (as previously alluded to) but also the same car's REAR diff - you can see where I'm going - run it upside down up front and you've got a modern, light, strong 3-diff drivetrain good for 300bhp all day long; that's what you get from a very lightly tweaked GTB motor.
Shopping list includes reversed cable gearshift, driveshaft mods, diff carrier bracket, syncro fuel tank and front uprights.
Oooh, I'm liking the sound of this for the Microbru Anyone got some orphan syncro front uprights? Yes, really!

2.5's never came with dual range box as far as I am aware, only 2L...

scobby box etc fne as a road vehicle.. all open diffs not so good off road.. some rear diffs are LSD, so would be a bit silly in the front of a syncro with nowt in the rear.. but there are lots of variations on the boxes for some reason.. even accross the same model... its interesting, but costly..

Oh and its not just the uprights you need.. a few other bits too...

OK so I'd need the front uprights and hub assemblies from a syncro; some driveshafts would be handy, but not essential. Fuel tank is a given, Gearshift to sort. All the rest can come from the donor. Since the Microbru has already been butchered (possibly by TSR...) about the hind quarters I'll make my own engine bars/mountings and front diff cage. I think someone is now doing LSD's for the front Subaru diff - read it somewhere, loads of ££££ - but it's not essential. The reverse cwp will eat up enough dosh on it's own. I'm thinking that this would make a spectacular road going T3 and work well when the weather goes off!

E D I T : looks like there is far more to this than I realized Isn't there always?
It's still a good idea (I think) but I would need a complete syncro steering & front suspension package, for starters.
Off to the wanted column when I'm slightly more solvent...

PS Looks like the gearshift may be easier to sort than at first glance. Not "reversed" as such.
If I can find one of the selectable 4wd transaxles and diff with 3.9 ratio this one's a goer

Can't seem to find that one I'm really getting the twitch about the whole idea now, scanning fleabay for a cheapo Legacy to dismantle!
Aidan - small question? If my Van is pulling about 3300rpm in 5th with the correct tyre diameter (well, about 5% small) what diff ratio have I probably got installed? It's been rebuilt before, so I can't trust the code.

I've just bought a 97 Legacy 2.2 with dual range box for the right money, to break up for the motor, loom and trans (noisy gearbox bearing - I can sort that at work). Project underway! (and I'm certifiable...)
Anyone going to need any Leggy trim or electrical bits sometime soon?
Think that I've found a syncro front suspension set-up. I'm not looking forward to paying for that cwp
