Gearbox noise?
The gearbox in my van (5 speed) makes a slight rubbing/bearing noise when idling. The noise stops when i press the clutch pedal. Anyone any idea if this is likely to be the box or the clutch release bearing?

Re: Gearbox noise?
I have something similar when the clutch is depressed, and the engine is at idle (around 1250 rpm) In my case I believe that its the release bearing and also the lack of oil in the gearbox!
Its always made the noise, nothing major to worry about, just remember to change the bearing (and gearbox oil seal at the next clutch replacement!)

Most likely the release bearing, but its worth changing the gearbox oil in any case... most will never had any gear oil changes..

Re: Gearbox noise?
Just an update. I have now changed the clutch release bearing, spigot bearing and the oil and the noise remains. So the noise must be coming from the gearbox. Is this likely to mean impending catastrophic failure or can I drive it for a while like this? The van has been in storage for 3 years thats why its taken me so long to investigate the noise.

Re: Gearbox noise?
if the noise goes when you push the clutch down its probally 1st motion shaft bearing in the box.
