Is this plausable? "syncro TD for sale I'm looking at"

Post by Essex Nige »

Went to see a syncro with a 16td engine, the fella drove it as i listened and looked...

On start up no smoke, but as the turbo kicked in it smoked which means OIL... he told me that because it's stood for ages there has been a little bit of seepage? the smoke did begin to fade but as the van had no tax we didn't go very far... So what do we think??

I'd want to take it for a drive, a decent length one and at a decent cruising speed (avoiding any sort of camera! ) then to walk away and come back the day after and see what it's doing. Explain that you're concerned about it being a serious fault, if they're a genuine seller they'll understand, if not I'd walk away.

Out of interest are there any oil spots on the tailgate? I'll guess the answer is no as the seller would probably have it nice and clean for you!
We're doomed!

No oil spots, but the seller didn't know i was coming, and it hadn't been cleaned recently. Knowing my luck i'd drive it and get caught by the rozzers :(

you can legally drive on a public highway without tax providing you are travelling to or from a pre appointed place of mot test or repair. if its not mot`d then you should be able to wangle something out along those lines. if its still got mot then i dont know if it would still stand, probally not. you still have to have valid insurance.

Smoke doesn't mean oil, well, oil of sorts, could be fuel, could be alsorts.
