'Rough' starting

Post by mikeymancs »

Hi all,

I have had my 1988 T25 1.6TD camper for about 3 weeks now, drove her 250 miles home no problems at all and have been out at least 2/3 times a week since.

I have given her a service (oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter etc) but seem to have what I can only describe as rough starting.

It has become apparant that there is an issue with starting....
When I turn the ignition key, the glow plug light comes on for about 10 seconds, then when it goes out I fully turn key and she fires up, but lots of white/light grey smoke and quite 'rattly' for about 5 minutes.

Once warmed up she settles down and smoke output lessens dramatically..

Any ideas?

I was thinking new glow plugs as a starting point?

Any help very much appreciated!
Mike

It does sound like the glow plugs could do with testing...pull them out out and test to see if the tips glow cherry red, if not time for new ones....

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the reply matey.

Forgot to add - there is also a smell which I can only describe as unburnt diesel for the first few minutes....

Would the glow plugs theory still stand with this in mind?

Thanks again
Mike
