HELP! what engine do i have in my camper
I hope the all knowing people of this forum can help be out, ive got a 1.6TD komet (so i thought) looking on ebay to find a broken part (Vacuum Pump spout) i find a few on there that look like mine (see pic) but all are listed for golfs, passat's and other VW's no transporters checked on few campervan parts sites no part like this listed for T25, this got me thinking then after reading few more posts i see that other T25 1.6TD's have two header tanks for the collent system, mine has one, also both my batteries are in behind the seats non in the enging bay ??
will take a pic of my enging later but if you have any thoughts please let me know ?

The factory fitted 1.6TD engine in a T25 is a Golf engine & the starter battery should be in the engine bay. If your starter battery is under the drivers seat, that could mean that your van started life with a petrol engine.

Re: HELP! what engine do i have in my camper
yep almost 100% sure its WAS a petrol
no battery tray , and that little clip above the water tank is for the petrol air filter housing!
the poart is for a diesel engine
the 1.6 and 1.9 diesel versions are different , not interchangeable!
the hole in the engine is different , and the top plate is a different thickness and the holes are in adifferent place!

might start doing some digging then all the paperwork looks to tally up, log book and such. even had orignal owner manual, could it be in the past its had everything swaped over from a komet onto a better shell ?? (sure i read somewhere komet only came as TD ?)
is there any other ways i could spot this was a petroL before,
Will take a note of the enging number, its running fine now was stuck in 3hours of m25 traffic no issues,
Thanks for yor thoughts !

The Autohomes Komet also came with a 2.1DJ 112bhp fuel injected petrol engine. Brendan (1664) has one. It may have had the option of a 1.9DG 78bhp petrol engine.

I'm not an expert on oil burning engines, So shoot me down if the coolant system is different from a petrol.
On your coolant expansion tank there is a blue cap with a length of hose on,
Where does this go on your van?
It should go to a top up tank.

I was going to say that. The top up tank usually sits behind the numberplate flap.

top hose looks twisted.
turbo diesel vans always had a raised tunnel where the gear stick is.
all but 1.6 diesels had the larger radiator fan 2.1 petrol still had small one.
td's were all 5 speed(any one confirm?)
all td diesel vans came with an engine undertray and some n/a diesels
your engine bay has been painted, never seen a black autohomes!
no engine bay battery tray(100% diesels had battery in engine compartment)
glow plug lamp on dash?
have a look at the rear panel in the engine bay, where the engine bars bolt to it , factory diesels have a plate welded to the van to allow for 3 bolt mounts, non diesels only had 2 holes in the panel
your airfilter is incomplete/not fitted correctly
what year was your van?
have a look infront your right knee when your sat in the driving seat , is there a paper sticker? should have engine/gearbox code along with chassis number?
have a look out side your van under the drivers side front jacking point. look at the back of it , the face that points to the rear of the van , thats where your chassis number is stamped , check this with the logbook!

Re: HELP! what engine do i have in my camper
Hi all (merry Xmas)
Thanks for the posts sorry taken so long to reply was away for the big day,
seams my van has had some issues in the past, its been to cold to be out digging but one thing thats come out of your information i have some work to do in order to make things right, Im not looking to have a show van but before i tidy the inside and paint the outside i want to make sure the engine and running gear is spot on, im giving up the option of a new motorbike and spending the money on the van..
From what you guys have said and what ive checked the camper started as a life as a petro later its had a 1.6td fitted then it had a new 1.6td fitted 6000 miles ago (i have the paper work for that) but seams the fitting of it was not so good and i have some issues to resolve,
Ive booked it into my local beetle and camper place (beetlelink in Farnbrough) Grant fitted new turbo and heater matrix for me a while ago i trust him 100% will ask him to but things right !...
Thanks for all your help,

Re: HELP! what engine do i have in my camper
Just a quick update, yep my van was missing some parts...
after a few weeks of coolent problems i gave up and handed it to the pro's THE TOP UP BOTTLE WAS MISSING witch ment it was drawing in air when it was needing water, that fixed found i was still getting air locks, leak behind the water pump. one new water pump later ho yeah and cam belt and all the other bits and bobs we think we have cracked it, was running sweet but few more test miles before i get her back... fingers crossed its all as it shoud be now...
