Re: Is it worth using high octane petty?
so my 2.1 although being a bigger engine is also running hotter than the 1.6 and 1.9s (maybe not as much as a 112 bhp DJ, but 2nd in the list).
what are symptoms of pinking then, a sluttering engine possbily?
therefore it is advised due to being a bigger/hotter engine to put in a higher octane

I always think 'pinking' is very similar to the sound of having a light chain dragging underneath - best description I can give. 'ping-ting-ting-ping' etc and only under load.

- only running it a few miles to the gym 3/4 times a week
cold weather
92 octane petrol
but the engine was really sounding like a tractor on low revs, meaning when changing gear too.
also was getting the tappets sound more, I guess due to the short trips, so went for a 30 mins drive last night, to get it going.
both the 2.1mv and 2.1ss run on normal unleaded.
only the 2.1 needs 98 ron

In a word, no.
As has been said, it'll do you no good unless you have an engine that needs it. High performance turbo engines, mainly - too much boost = detonation. My old Saab turbo needs it to stop the excessive boost grenading the engine, and to be honest it can be a pain in the a*** having to find a garage with some in the pumps. Stick to the cheap stuff and be grateful...

Re: Is it worth using high octane petty?
It's nothing to do with an engine being bigger (larger capacity) it is the relative power that an engine unit produces for it's cubic capacity and the additional heat a high performance unit produces. These old flat 4 wasserboxers have relatively low power output for their engine capacity and as someone pointed out...were designed to operate on 92 RON (appart from the higher compression 112bhp 2.1 DJ) this is much lower that our current REGULAR fuel which is 95 RON.
