Where`s my coolant going ?

Post by Daisy »

1986 1.9 petrol watercooled.
Acouple of months ago i replaced my waterpump, and since then i have been losing about half a ltr of coolant from the tank behind the numberplate there are no visible signs of a leak at any of the pipe connection or even in the pipes themselves, no sign of water in the oil or Mayanaise in the oil filler cap.

It even loses the coolant (half ltr) over about a week when stood.

Any ideas please

:D

place some card board under the radiator pipes and engine.
run it up to temp, switch off and leave it to drip.

it's leaking somewhere just a case of finding it

The usual thing is to fit a new component and the change upsets another ... it'll have found a leak elsewhere underneath on the pipes or something.

Try parking over a clean, dry area and leave the van over night.

If you are loosing coolant from the tank behind the numberplate even when the van is not being used you have probably cracked the tank when changing the pump.
Coolant cant go into or out of this tank unless the engine is warming up or cooling down.

I lose a little bit of coolant out of my new water pump, where a blanking bolt has been inserted, maybe you have not bled the system properly after you fitted the water pump?
