Hi,
I'm having problems finding many garages in my part of the world that actually sell 98 RON so I would like to set up the engine to run on 95 RON and I'm aware from previous posts that this is ok but I'm not sure exactly what needs changing, can anyone advise me on this please?
cheers
Tim.

Re: 2.1 DJ engine set up to run on 95 RON
From the Wiki
5 BTDC degrees for unleaded on a DJ and disconnect the vacuum advance and retard and block hoses to time.
HarryMann said.. Valve seats are hardened but CR is high at 10.5:1 so it's just a matter of Octane rating and pinking/detonation. Dropping the static advance back about 5 degrees will just reduce performance a bit, but engine will run fine!
TooManyToys said... If 98 is available then use that with the ignition timing at 10 degrees BTDC If only 95 available you need to set the timing to 5 degrees BTDC (or damage the engine) If there is only 91 unleaded, then you are in trouble.. I dont think the DJ will happily run on that even with timing set to 0 deg ...

Just put in octane booster
To be honest I run on 95 ron in mine when I run low on gas, and have never had a problem

runnig on 95 without retarding timing will eat your pistons eventually

'If, of necessity, the engine has to be operated on lower octane fuel, do not use full throttle otherwise detonation may occur with resultant piston trouble and failure
pre detonated piston

...pinking is an unseen killer of engines...I'd be retarding

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I didn't find the information on Wiki, I did have a look but couldn't see it before however I found it very easily just a moment ago! I have driven it with lower grade fuel but I never rev it hard anyway as it runs rough at higher revs regardless of the fuel rating. This may sound like a stupid question but here goes anyway; after I disconnect the vaccum advance and retard hoses and block them to time do I then reconnect them afterwards or do they remain disconnected and blocked?
Cheers
