What do you mean by 'Lead it'? I couldn't find any lead fillers (at least on the halfords website). Or do you mean use actual molten lead?

I'll get some pics tomorrow to show the type of thing I mean. I still have some poking about to do to find out the extent of the dodgyness that's gone on before. For example - I've just found a crack in the nearside front wheel arch that I think was filled at some point and painted over. I have no idea how deep that filler goes and whether I can dig it out and re-fill it, or whether even more welding will be required. I just wanted a general idea of what type of thing to go for if I do attempt to fill some minor little cosmetic bits.

It doesn't sound too difficult. Would this technique only be suitable for filling in dents, or could you fill in small holes this way? My dad's a good welder (he'd be quite happy to do some basic repairs for me if I had a welding machine), and he's very meticulous... I bet he could make a good job of that sort of thing.

Lead loading is fine onto bare metal. Its crap onto bare rust ...........its also more expensive than filler.
If youve got a hole it won't fill that unless its really small.
Lead loading was really designed for the days when panels were less consistent in shape and needed the ripples smoothing over, that sort of thing. Filler is the best way for you to go, honest.....
As a bodywork specialist friend of mine says "any fool can weld metal to metal, it takes an expert to weld metal to rust"........he used to restore Jags and can do lead loading -but uses filler on everything thats not worth £50k +....
