What have I done to my battery??

Post by iggi »

Hello, need some advice here.
Was polishing my halo earlier this week having successfully removed my (flat, not moved for weeks) battery from the van and charged it up overnight. Also remembered which way round to put it back in. BUT, while tightening it in one of the wires got pulled out from the terminal. There are two wires, and the one that's broken had some wire sticking out on either side - I pushed the little plastic sleeve that covered it over the two halves and it is holding together. Car is starting/driving. BUT, is this dangerous? What would happen if the wire became separated? Would I cut out/explode or what? I'd thought could maybe get away with just taping the connection up tightly. Or do I need to take it to a garage?
Many thanks for any advice.Image

That's an earth cable for something I doubt you would explode but there may be a possibilty of a fire if it touches a live, blown fuses.......etc

fix the cable properly with a soldered joint or recrimp the joint with a new connection
You can say alot of of things with "ar"

Thank you, I'll definitely do something about it!
Is recrimping etc something a garage would do for me (without any rolling of eyes)? Bearing in mind I'm pleased to work out how to charge it, you're moving way over my head!

These are a couple of small earth cables that someone has added to the battery, the blue sleaves don't even need to be there! as long as the wire going into the terminal is firm then you have no issues. An easy fix here would have been to add a plain washer ontop of the terminals then the terminals would not have rotated.

Thank you very much, that's odd, wonder why they are there?
By wire going into terminal, you mean not the two earth ones don't you?
(Am hoping you are feeling mellow 'cause it's the weekend and not minding stupid questions)

I did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago when disconnecting my flat battery for charging. 1 wire fell out of its little yellow plastic sheath, so before re-connecting the battery I went and bought a crimping set so I could re-attach the wire, assuming it was something important. When I actually followed the wire I found out it was only connected to a fan on the dashboard that I was going to get rid of anyway!

Lol, I wouldn't have had to go out and buy them! The ones I got were like these (http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/full/YP96E.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), only cheapy ones from a local hardware shop. I'll probably never need them again!

Yes...I mean the two smaller earth cables (the especially the one you have twisted) as long as the bare wire ends aren't loose in the eyelet terminals and are firmly crimped they will be fine.
