Thanks for offering to help out, Kevtherev. I'll try to get this one repaired locally. If t can't be welded, i'll try the want
ad as suggested.

When i refit the pipe is it okay to use jubilee clips on the short section of rubber hose? I don't fancy fighting
with those VW circlips again.

yes you can.

But I prefer the VW ones, I use a pair of mole grips to compress them

A quick update re my battle with the coolant pump. After a bit of sawing (rusty bolts) and huffing and puffing, managed to
get the pump off with the small metal pipe attached. Had to cut the lower allen key bolt (pipe to pump) but was much easier
with the pump removed. Removed the big pulley to make life easier. Metal pipe has been repaired where it was leaking.

I cut the short rubber section of hose that joins the metal pipe to the plastic pipe that goes to the engine block(does it have a name?)
as i didn't want to disturb/struggle with two more rusty looking nuts. Before cutting the plastic hose i attempted to remove the VW circlips - must have yanked a little too hard. After fitting the new pump, hoses... i started pouring coolant into the expansion tank and
it started dripping from the flange of the plastic piece of pipe. I removed the big pulley again and unscrewd the pipe from the pump and
plastic section from the block. After cleaning the plastic flange i noticed it was cracked on both outer edges where it sits on the studs.

I know the metal pipe is no longer in production. Is it still possible to buy the plastic section? Part number on pipe is: BPO 025 121 171B
Couldn't see it on Just Kampers.

Someone here on Gran Canaria will make one from stainless steel for around 80 Euros. Have you han much experience
with the supplier in France?

well done for the fitting .. bit pricey though :D

Finally! After a six week wait for the small water pipe, which the local VW main dealer here on Gran Canaria tracked down in Spain, everything is back together and after a few longish runs appears to be running okay.

Thanks to everyone who pointed the mechanically challengd in the right direction.

Anyone have any tips for repairing a hole (about an inch diameter) in the silencer? I can't find any exhaust repair kits or tape in
the shops here.

The dealer that supplied my van 6months ago had changed the water pump for me prior to collection due to wear. I was intending to pay a local vw mechanic in Cowes IOW to drain, flush and replace my coolant as a precautionary measure. However, on reading this thread its become clear to my simple mind that the dealer would have had to drain and replace the coolant to replace the water pump. Admittadly its blue cheap stuff but my tester pen indicates its the correct concentration. Should I bother paying for the coolant to be replaced? Cheers :wink:

you mean with the proper stuff with rust inhibitor?

Any good quality branded stuff is fine in the right concentration.. (Use concentrate and dilute with demin water) change it every 3 or 4 years.. In reality something often leaks in this time and you end up changing it in any case.. :rofl
Using the expensive VW stuff isnt required, its not going to fix all the rusty bits in the system and you'll be a bit peed off when its all over the floor...
