Re: removing piston's n liners
Idealy you want the VW pin removing tool, but IIRC its NLA.. its poss to use a "rawl bolt" to do it.. after removing the barrel and the pin "circlip".. BUT you must support the piston and prevent it from pulling sidewards on the rod.. (not good for the rod or big end bearing.. ) most likely the pin has jiggled back and forth and created a burr on the circip groove, this has to be over come (as its difficult to get in to "ream it off) so you may find a slide hammer (or similar) will be required.. This is why you need to support the piston very well...
Oh.. if you havent got the engine out, do it now.. it will be very difficult to remove the pins, sort the stud and work on it with it still in the van...

Re: removing piston's n liners
access through the water pump recess tony for No 3 (once No 4 liner and piston has been removed)
unless you can wind it out with the right tool as said you must support the piston when sliding it, or it will kink the rod.
One other thing.. be careful with the piston or any thing hitting the bottom of the crank case where the liner sits as it dents the liner seal face.. you don't want dents

Thank's Kev, Si greatful of any advice offered i wouldn't really bother with this but as the engine is a recon and done less than 20,000 in 2 years i can't afford not to have a go.
