Is my engine terminal

Post by reggie1andy1 »

Hi,

I have ave a 1.6 JX TD which cut out and just died on me while returning home yesterday, the RAC couldnt get it started so they recovered me home, there was no loss of coolant or oil and the temp was normal. Today I managed to start the engine but the oil filter ruptured and shot oil everywhere, can any one give me a clue what has gone wrong

Many thanks,

Andy.

The filter exploding could be a blockage in the oil galleries? Try an engine flush new filter as for conking out any more clues eg stuttering lack of power?

Fuel cut off solenoid, have a looksie see if it's popped off but without big bangs crunching symptoms I would say electrical

cracked liner?? whatever it is that has caused the filter to explode its got to be attributed to excessive pressure in th oil galleries. i'm no expert on these engines but it sounds an expensive fix to me ,especially at vw take it to a good specialist. oh and good luck.

It is difficult to relate the two incidents. I guess if the oil pressure relief valve became jammed closed and the oil filter is situated between the two then I maybe the pressure build up could rupture the filter. But of course if it jammed when the engine was running you would expect the oil pump gear to strip for instance or as you describe the oil filter to rupture and the engine to keep running until it siezed through lack of oil. I wouldn't necessarily connect the two events. You definately need advice from a proficient mechanic but careful not to get talked into a rebuild wwithout being absolutely sure it needs one.
Good luck

Thanks for the advice, could you tell me where the oil pressure relief valve is located?

Many thanks,

Andy.
