head light problem

Post by yankiecamper »

Hi all
I have got a 1981 USA T25 westfalia 1.6 turbo diesel which has now got a problem with its head lights, here’s what’s happening when I put the head lights on the main beam light on the dash lights up and the side lights stay on head lights don't come on the indicators come on all the time but not flashing they just say on and today when I have been driving home when I indicate the main bean light and indicator light in the dash both flash. I have checked the bulbs the fittings the storks I cant see anything wrong with them has anyone had or know to anyone that has had the same problems? or does anyone know what mite be wrong? I am open to any suggestions as I am at a lost myself

hope to here from someone soon

thank you in advance

Believe me I am no expert, but my money in situations such as this is Earths.....the earth crown behind the fuse box, and in other places too!

there have been a spate of light problems just recently...and those in the know rub their chins and sagely murmur "earths....that'll be your problem".....

have you checked your repeater? have no idea if it would display these symptons if it went down, but do the indicators ever flash?

well, since I am on a roll, I am gonna have another stab..

guessing another Earth is failing somewhere.... but glow plugs is diesel, and I have petrol! You will need a diesel spectialist to advise.

oh - unless its like my oil light....after a very wet/damp night, the light stays on and gradually dims after the water around the sensor gradaully evaporates!!! I diagnosed this following several wet nights, and a quick spray of the engine when driving through a shallow ford (slowly....)

Well done on getting your lights working!

never heard of aqua lec but can it conduct slightly if you have been generous in your coverage?

earth crown needs stripping and cleaning and the dodgy earth which is one of the split ones will want contact cleaning, failing that finding and reterminating, the bad earth means the led becomes the path of least resistance for the switched lights/backlight circuit, had this on mine once, now I always carry contact cleaner, it beat the rac man, even though I was fairly sure it was an earth fault he couldn't fix it so had to be recovered home. Stripped it the following day and cleaned up the 2 crowns and fixing to the chassis and loads of contact cleaner on all the spades and has been fine for last 3 years.
Mind I did replace the windscreen seal subsequently, so i no longer leaks into fuse board area
