I am currently running a 4 speed diesel box coded DM would ut be possible to change it to a 5 speed petrol box.
I am aware I would have to change the input shaft (how hard is that any tips appriciated) the bell housing, and gearbox linkage's from 4 to 5 speed( is there anything to look out for), the gearbox mount( how hard a job is that does it involve welding or is it simpler), my clutch is a diesel clutch and brand new would I be able to use this?
Thank you very much phil

Why do you want 5 speeds? the box is generally considered weaker than the 4 speed and the overall ratios are generally not that different, although it all depends on what code the box is.. Getting a good box with the right code is the key..
Have you got more power? as fitting a higher ratio box generally will not make it better, usually more tiresome as you will be dropping out of top gear a lot more.. unless that is you happen to have a "mountain ratio" box....
Getting Aidan to rebuild your existing box with the right ratios would be a good investment..

Re: Aidan help please gearbox query
I got offered a cheap box from a crashed van that was known to be working before, the reason for the change is I gave a 1Y engine and just about manage 60 MPH without killing the engine.
I dontknow the code of the 5 speed but looking at the ratios they seem much better fir cruising?

Without the code you cant tell whats in the box.. haynes just has a "default" selection of ratio's.. they may be the same they prob are not.. if its a known good box and cheap, then you could have a go.. But have a look at another recent post on here about the linkages etc thats needed...

Brick-yard has a list of all gearboxes ... code and gear ratios:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
think you will need complete 5sp shift linkage from stick to box.
