Any Assistance would be appreciated
Hello Ladies & Gents
I have had my camper since July this year and my son has travelled to Hungary in it with only the stabilisor linkages requiring replacement 4500 miles.
The van has stood for about 8 weeks and now will not start, I have checked the usual things, but there appars to be no fuel getting though, as I have disconnected the fuel line into the carb and turned the engine, and no fuel flows the filter under the van from the tank appears to have fuel in it, and there is fuel in the maintank, not sure what to do next, is it the fuel filter blocked or fuel pump not working it always started easy previously.
Any expertise or assistance would be greatly appreciated

Hi Lloyd
Sounds like the mechanical fuel pump has gone.. they tend to do that... pretty easy to pick up from Just Kampers of GSF.. I would also replace the inline fuel filter while your there..
Fairly easy fix, couple of hours at the most..

suck on the fuel pipe the carb end, then refit it once you have tasted fuel!
some times the pump goes dry.
make sure the pipe hasent split underneath or someone has drained the fuel!

Somebody asked a similar question the other day, they were advised to pour a small quantity of fuel into the top of the carb and try starting it, do it a couple of times. It may be cranking it over is not pulling the fuel up fast enough.

Don't fancy a moutful of petrol though, still I guess needs must!

Yep, the fuel down the carb trick was my suggestion. Theres no fuel in the line thats all. Usually a capful or two down the carb throat will get the engine all excited (briefly) and those short-lived revs are generally enough to pull the fuel through and away she'll go. It can splutter back, so don't do it with your eye over the carb mouth or anything daft like that, though no idea why you'd want to

Remove the airfilter and tip a small amout of fuel in maybe a capful or so.

Yep, about as much as you could get in the cap from an oil container. You don't need much but may need to repeat this three or four times. Cranking the engine on the starter (particularly if fuel pipes are dry) may not be enough to pull fuel through before battery goes flat (tank is a fair distance remember), but the rapid speed that follows a shot or two of fuel down the carb throat generally does it. Have run dry of fuel in the past and I always prime the system that way rather than risk flattening the battery - another thing I learnt from bugs which also have the tank some distance away.
Incidentally, one trick I have used in the past to ascertain if theres any spark on an engine that won't fire up, is a tiny shot of meths - if it won't try to start on that, theres no spark at all. Its sometimes a usefully quick way to know where to look, but only as a last resort. Timing badly out could be a cause too so its not a hard and fast rule but as a rough method to tracing problems its often handy.
But in this instance, where its been stood, straight petrol down the carb throat will do the job fine. All you're doing essentially is increasing the speed of the fuel pump.

Hi Ladies , thanks for the previous assistance I have got filter off and just want to check regarding topping the carb with petrol,doI fill up the hole in the centre of carb with little brass pipe over top, to the top or just a bit with petrol?
I have put a finger over the carb input pipe and got my son to turn the engine over and can hardly notice any pressure, is this correct?
I have also attempted to suck the petrol but there appears to be no resistance at all.
The van has only been left for about 8 weeks and worked fine before.
If I get a replacement petrol pump would this do the trick.

NO! Don't fill it up just put a capful in then try and start it, its should start and run for a short time do this a few times..

Just a tiny drop of fuel is enough, all your doing is testing that the engine will try to fire..
It does sound like your fuel pump is knackered. when they go, they go.. there is rarely any warning..
Its a 20 minute job to replace and after a few turns of the key should start like before.. (worth making sure the battery is charged too)
