Engine removel quick question
Changing the 1.6D engine on a mates T25 next weekend. We've got hold of a 1.6TD from a Golf but its already been fitted to a T25 so all mods have already been done. Just a quick question. Reading the manual It tells me the engine drops out from under the van. I'm doing this in the drive so was wondering how high I'll need to get the van to slide the engine out.

Ive done it with the van on a pair of halfrauds ramps before. took a bit of wiggling about but just possible.
Hopefully someone will be along shortly with a better solution

I always put engine on the floor on two blocks of wood then physically drag it out, jacking up one corner of the bus to give enough room. same in reverse.

Just put some concrete blocks laid flat under the wheels

Putting it on ramps is ok but i find they get in the way.
I prefer to use two jacks to lift up the back of the van. It doesnt have to be jacked up high for long.
You mates going to love the new engine after a 1.6D

Spot on Ringo. Learnt this the hard way in the 80s by taking Haynes at face value. The same was true of the beetle although in that instance we used to lower lump then get four strong blokes to lift beetle over the engine. Ramps may seem way to go but catch you out later on.

Hi,
Have braved the cold for you. My T25 is still in a raised position after having the engine removed some days ago.
I have ramps which are adjustable in height, and bottem of rear tyres are about 10" off the ground
This makes the bottom of the back of the van bodywork about 2ft above the ground. I lowered the engine onto a piece of ply with 4 castors underneath,
which makes it quite easy to slide out afterwards and into the garage. (Trolley is about 3" thick)
I was advised to take off the obvious things such as the exhaust to give yourself as much free space as possible, and this paid dividends.

engine probably wont last too long if he dosent change the gearbox!
top end probably wont be much different , except he will be redlining more often-advise him to still not drive above 50mph
also remember when vw fitted the td they put a larger radiator/radiator fan/radiator ducting / auxhilary water pump all to help cool the engine down!
