yep
get a multimeter
set it to V (direct current or DC)
put the probes separately on each terminal of the Battery
read off the reading
ideally you want any thing over 13V when the engine is running

Your charger relay may be stuck on the leisure battery side or the wire to charge the main battery has come off.

yes..
Your Batt light comes on signify there is NO CHARGE from the alternator..NOT that you need a new battery.
the engine is then using your battery to run the engine... and that won't be for long!
is there something im missing
yes, a working regulator/rectifier.
take off the alternator, remove the regulator.. and replace it with a new one they cost £10

Yep that happened to us in Northern Ireland last summer.
Sorted in 1hr by a helpful auto electrician in Belfast at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon.....PHEW!!
New regulator fitted and a wire had snapped.

Re: alternater
VAG 1009 is an aftermarket part number and the replacement I ordered for my 90amp/hr Bosch alternator....they are NOT all the same so the company will ask for the number off the red label on the body of the alternator so they can cross reference the number to the correct part. Mine has been fitted over a year now and going strong.
Also.....you do not have to remove the alternator...just the two retaining screws in the regulator pack...you may have to undo the adjuster bracket and take off the belt in order to gain enough room to get straight on the screws.
