Wet Feet!

Post by keith2874 »

Hello all, and a happy new year :D

I took my 1992 LLE multivan out on boxing day to go to a party, and on the way water started dripping onto my right foot from under the dash. It only seems to happen when the heater fan is switched on. It's not a lot of water, and the dripping stopped after a few mins. The following morning it did it again, but less so.

I've checked the windscreen seal and all appears to be well - I'm thinking it could be related to the heater in some way.

Any ideas?

Regards

Keith

Right foot almost certainly windscreen seal. Checked the top carefully? Reason I say that is even the slightest pinhole/gap in the rubber and it'll run down inside the seal, down to bottom edge and on to your foot. I know because mine does it for same reason. Sometimes radio aerial will cause it, but its almost always the windscreen seal.

Don't use it in the rain :rofl ....Or take the screen out then the problems start when you find the rot round the screen mounting.

You need a dry day (unlikely now) and run clear aquatic silicon sealant right under the lip all the way round, lifting it as you go. Water can also get in via capillary action against the glass - you could try 'creeping crack cure' for that. Otherwise yes the only answer is screen out, repair the rot and fit a brand new seal.

before you do anything else check the aerial hole (mine was leaking there) and also the washer jets themselves can leak.
as yours is a 92 i seriously doubt the screen corners are rotten

thanks for all the info. Have checked the van and the drivers side washer jet is hanging loose so may be that that's the cause of the bother. Will reseal it if it ever stops pissing down!

Thanks

Most seem to concentrate on bottom two corners (no bad thing) but I found that even the tiniest gap in the rubber along top edge (particularly corners) allows water underneath which then runs completely unseen behind the rubber lip, down and into the area above accelerator pedal (often does same on passenger side) and drips down on to your foot (more noticebable if you wear crocks!). In a lot of cases it sits under mats too and is one of the causes of floor rot. The T25 windscreen seal is just a rubber gasket and really needs a modern windscreen sealant along with the proper rubber as shrinkage invariably causes water ingress. Even if the seal isn't rotten (mine isn't) water just works its way in eventually`. Even a 1992 van is 15 years old - thats a long time to expect a windscreen seal to still do its job when its been through hot summers and cold winters for so many years with no additional protection.

With that in mind, when I finally remove my screen in the summer, weld up the lip and replace the seal, I'll be using additional sealant for a really watertight seal.
