Look on the flat area below the breather tower, it'll probably be a number with the all important prefix ... DG etc etc.
Running a carb means nothing, could still be a 2.1 ... the DJ/MV and SS all have injection as standard but that could've been replaced.

The 2.1's came with an oil cooler as standard .... a square block where the oil filter screws on ... not many 1.9's had that. The 2.1 thermostat housing has an outlet spigot which goes across the top of the left bank and the water pump has an extra outlet on the top which crosses to the oil filter block.

BTW if you've got the carb nearby ... if it says 'Pierburg' on it it's from a DG if it's a PICT then it's definately a DF

I doubt that a stamped letter would "rub" off
More likely that it's a replacement or reconditioned unit which had only a few numbers.
a closer look may reveal a star or a little VW logo after the numbers
if you find hills a challenge then it's not a 2.1

The VW logo indicates it's a Volkswagen genuine replacement engine... I doubt it has been ground off it's just unfinished casting.T25daisy wrote:hi there yes its got an vw logo then the number 268, the rest has been ground of ,ive got a 1.9 in the van at the mo , im rebuilding the one ive just bought what is the diffence in pistons or bore from a 1.9 to 2.1
94 mm Bore and Stroke is 68.9 mm in the 1.9 Compression Ratio. 8.6:1
94 mm Bore and Stroke is 76 mm in the 2.1 Compression ratio. 10.5:1
pistons are shorter in the 2.1 different crank, camshaft and and big end pins
what makes it different is, as you can see, the longer stroke, higher compression and valve timing.
i.e. sucks in more fuel... squeezes it more ....bigger bang
I know that the MV pistons are different from DJ.. so I'm guessing that DG ones are too being a lower compression engine
