Tyres for a 14

Post by The BCE »

I know this crops up frequently, but I've yet to see a definitive answer.

I need 5 new tyres and would prefer to get ATs rather than the road ones on the van at the moment.

In an ideal world I'd like to get BF Goodrich ATs, but these only seem to start in R15 ... unless someone knows where you can still get them in R14 :?:

If not, does anyone currently run any ATs in R14 that are good.

Or any suggestions of alternative tyres?

Cheers,

Ben

Yes this goes around and around... and no there doesnt seem to be a definative answer...

Some say the BFG's are discontinued, but IIRC someone managed to get a set early this year.. so you have to ask a friendly tyre dealer or 3...

Otherwise its a set of winter tyres.. I have a set of semperit van grips (185's), that perform very well in all weathers, but dont do so well on anything more than wet grass really.. they have lasted well on dry summer roads too at motorway speeds.... just about to finish off a set of part worn 195 vredestien transport snows that aid gearing and clearance (thanks Doug :ok ) but they are an old design..

Difficulty id getting anything in the right size's.. 185's are easy enough, but 205's are much harder to find, some have used 195's as they give a bit more ground clearance and are easy enough to get.. but getting a true off road AT in 14 is difficult.. the BFG's were 27/8.5r14 and there are a couple of others available in that size, but not available in the UK..

Cheers and cheers for the PM - I'll have a look.

My syncro camper currently has 6Jx14 VW pepper pot alloys on, with Good Year 205R14C Cargo G28 tyres (although the spare is annoyingly a Good Year Ultra Grip 300).

The return of the BFG 14" AT, hope it comes over here. When I first had a Syncro in 1990 it had the original Michelin M+S tyres. They were great but sadly nla years ago.

I ran a set of Maxxis M+S tyres in 185R14 which were really good, highly recommend them to anyone. Had Maxxis on our old Disco too and amazing value for money
What a long strange trip it's been
