Passat two litre engine
Hi,
I am contemplating converting my diesel syncro to petrol by installing a combination of VW 1.8 and two litre parts. Current thinking is a two litre block with the MkII Golf GTi head.
I have a 1.8 GTi engine but I am trying to source an Audi 80 2 litre engine from the late 80's ('3A' engine code) as this will give better low revs torque. Failing that, it will have to be a '2E' or 'AGG' engine from the early and late MkIII Golfs respectively. These engines were increased from 1.8 to 2.0 by having a wider bore (3A) or longer stroke. An AGG inlet manifold is also said to give more (sufficient?) clearance against the side of the engine bay / chassis rail.
Has anyone any experience of such a conversion that can offer any advice or first hand knowledge of the performance of said combination engine in T3?
thanks
Garyd

Re: Passat two litre engine
Because it would appear to be relatively simple and offer sufficient power and economy. Primarily because my family have breathing issues affected by the diesel exhaust. And the current engine is well past it's best.

slower than a water pisser and similar economy.garyd wrote:Because it would appear to be relatively simple and offer sufficient power and economy. Primarily because my family have breathing issues affected by the diesel exhaust. And the current engine is well past it's best.

Re: Passat two litre engine
what petrol option would you suggest then that is not too expensive to do and reasonably economic?

cant believe i am saying this but a 2.1 water pisser would suit van much better than the inline 1.8 or 2.0litresgaryd wrote:what petrol option would you suggest then that is not too expensive to do and reasonably economic?

cos the shell and gearbox was designed around a VW flat four, anything else is like trying to get a pint in 500ml glass, it can be done but there's always something left over or ridiculously compromised to make it fit, even the scooby has issues like the sump that need to be worked around or engineered around or put up with

Re: Passat two litre engine
have you concidered a volvo engine, b230, 2300cc up to 132bhp in non turbo form. ultra reliable and a lot of touque, it is what i am looking a for my doka when i have the time and the money. would have to cheak out the the clearence issues in a van, fine in a sika or doka though.
it pains me to say this but the yanks have been putting ford zetec in and it looks like a nice install, i think bostig is the name of the company producing the kit. very neat kit they make just plug and start with regards to the ecu etc

Re: Passat two litre engine
there are a fair few that have fitted 1.8 golf gti lumps...
apart from the LH Side of the engine bay being tight and needing mods to make good clearence on the inlet manifold its a nice easy engine thats easy to work on and easy to get bits for.
the most ideal 2.0l straight 4 would be an early audi short block one. (but not so easy to find a 3a now) has the same block length as the golf 1.8L but 2.0L
used to be very sort after buy people tuning mk2 golfs (got a list somewhere of what cars had it from vw motoring)
my caravelle is having a 2.0l from an early 90`s audi 80 tall block.
the aag is definatly a better manifold for clearence as it steps out alot less from the head but i dont know if it solves the clearence problems or not.

WHY T3's.... because they are just so adictive, and having one just aint enough
