Aftermarket rev counter for DJ WBX

Post by Mr Bean »

I just can't get used to having my engine burried under a load of bedding at the rear of my camper. This together with my Sad Old Man proper silencer often finds me unable to assess the time to change down a gear while slogging it up a long slope. Anyone know of a half decent aftermarket Tacho which will sense off the electronic ignition without causing problems?
Cheers

Sadly gone are the days when the first mod on a "new" vehicle was either knocking out the baffles or fitting a "Sports" silencer.

Yes maybe that is a solution but when you mention Plug And Play I remeber hunting around on the internet for DLL's and patches or having to upgrade to make it work. For Microsoft aanyway...

If your van has the buzzer of doom circuit ie after (86?) then you have the thin green coil wire already in the dash. On non tach dashes it is just used by that annoying circuit, and easy peasy to wire in a tach.

Well I have an eighty eight model so I will get out my Bentleys for reference and see if I can find that wire. So given I find a compatible Tacho the that is the trigger source? I guess the tacho will also need a 12V and ground connection.

The correct wire is the only thin pale green one that is in the wide multi pin plug that goes up under the dash and into the circuit board. Be careful with the multipin plug as the brass contacts get weak, and any movement in the plug can lose your connection. Worth just prying out the brass contacts to increase the contact pressure, and using a smear of electrical grease to help it on its way.

Most aftermarket gauges will have wires for ground, ignition live, tacho wire, and instrument lighting, which in the loom is a grey and red (iirc) wire that you find all over the place behind the dash going to all the little bulbs.

I might well buy a gauge already in a pod, and place it on the left of the dash board next to the windscreen. Easy to slip the wires under the dash plastic shroud.

Simon.
