Mileage

Post by willkinnersly »

Hi I am new here and Have just bought my first T25 Transporter Devon Conversion. 1988 petrol. What is considered a high mileage for these vans? My one is 157,000, used in Guernsey as a school van for 10 years when it did its first 100k miles, then used over the next 10 years and covered the next 50k miles.

Is this super high mileage by VW standards? And what should I do to keep it running / make it run really nicely, it has not been serviced in the last 10 years/50k miles.

Mechanicaly what the the howlers to get sorted on a van this age/ miles

All advise welcome

Thanks

Will

It is a high mileage but not by VW standards. Some engines can go round the clock 3 times if regularly services and maintained. Just run it but be aware of its pensioner status. Knowing its service history would help.

The race is on - will it rot before the engine conks out?

I'm only pulling your leg, mate! Welcome to the club. - We like pics please!

The history of a 100% marine environment suggests you might want to be careful with the rust, although I'm guessing they don't put so much salt and grit on the roads in the Channel Isles.

As posted above, with care the engines go on and on - just give TLC.

There are loads of helpful threads on here about how to service and care for these beasties - happy reading!

Hey Thanks guys,

Great to have a positive reaction to the 157k mileage. By the sounds of it the van will rot before the engine goes!!! I will treat her to some fresh oil and shelve the boy racer plans I had and just go surfing in france.

Looking at this site it is really helpful, and thanks for the nice welcome.

Ours is on 275,000
There is a receipt for a recon engine in the history though.

Hiya :ok

You haven't filled out your profile to say where you are in the country, we may know a recommended garage near you who can give the old bus a good service. At that mileage it would be no surprise if there's a leak or two, especially from the waterjacket seals, I'd be saving up about a grand for a replacement motor in the not-too-far distant future.
