starting problems, fuel not getting to carb

HI me again.

I've been having lots of trouble starting my 1986 water colled 1.9 DG engine T25 over the past few months.

I've had the RAC out 3 times. Every time it was a case of no fuel getting to the carb. They had to suck the petrol up via an in line hand pump from the tank..

In that time they have fitted a new pump which makes no difference. Checked all the fuel pipes (all clear and blockage free) they also blew down the line to the tank with an air compressor.

Although I am now managing to get it started most days it takes 3 to 4 times of starting up as it cuts out straight away at first. If I leave the van as happened whilst away at Brighton Breeze for 2-3 days I can't start it at all without sucking the fuel up to the carb first.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Tank vents semi-blocked? How about the unseen cone filter in the fuel inlet pipe on carb (a self tapper can be used to drag it out). Mine got crudded up and caused loads of fuel related probs. Muck in bottom of tank covering outlet? Fuel pump pushrod too short?

Try removing pipe from pump to carb and see what pump is actually chucking out. You can temporarily attach a pipe and run it into a clean jar whilst someone turns it over.

Have you tried checking the fuel pump rod length ?

it should be exactly 100mm in length..

Blob of plastercine on the end won't work either though you can weld a bit on if its short!

HI guys garage said it's a problem with a worn cam that drives the fuel pump rod, well something like that. Sorry if I'm vague still learning here. They said the cheapest option to fit an electric pump? any comments gratefully received.
