Fuel pump confusion

Post by barsocial »

Hi all a newbie is confused,

I've got some questions regarding our t3 1.6 td (jx) 1989 engine and it's symptom of over reving and high idle. I've looked through all the archive but can't seem to find the answer so I thought I'd post on here and see what happens..

Basically, the van starts really well first time and stops when key is turned to off :D . She sounds good on idle though high revs when hot. It is a steady rev and does not sound rough but just higher than it should be. The problem only arrises when the engine has come up to temperature (about 5km) and does 'not return to idle when the clutch is engaged'. Slowing the van down with a gear does reduce the revs ie, under load. I have eliminated the throttle cable to be causing this. Nor can it be be bushing on the trottle lever as I had this pulled all the way back and it was still reving high. So the question that comes into my head is of fuel. She had a new fuel filter 5k kms ago and new timing belt so they are ok . There is no black or white smoke either. We have noticed that she does get through more diesel since the porblem arose.

Does anyone think the sticking is being caused by the injection pump? Idle spring inside not returning? Should pump be tested you think? If so how much do you reckon to recon. and recalibrate?
I have access to a injection pump from a golf JR engine, same year of our van... Do you think this could be used instead? If so what would be the implicatios for the install? I've read about the engine cover getting in the way (hence the bed) but could it be done? I've read on the brickyard site about swapping the pump top, if this done will it require recalibrating?

So many questions I know, but the more I read on the internet the more questions I have!

JR pump can be used but you will need to raise the lid of engine compartment .Simon baxter sells a kit for this .The pumps body diffrent to the JX .Done this myself so no it works provided you set up the engine timing&pump .

Thank you for your reply. I think we will go for the swap and the engine lid modification as Simon Baxters kit makes it all look very neat indeed. Looking at doing it this week so will post outcome

Cheers :ok
