dashboard LED's high beam etc
Hi all, need to replace 2 LED's, the blue high beam and the red oil indicator. I was just gonna go into Maplins and buy them, but do i need 12 volts LED's or 5 volt? Or any other particular one, sorry for the silly question but just not totally up on all this stuff !
Also as i said i was gonna go to Maplins or does someone know where i can can get proper VW ones if there are such a thing?
Regards, Leigh

Re: dashboard LED's high beam etc
All the LED's (apart from the Main beam as pointed out by Rob)are just 5mm standard Brightness types and not 12V type as they have the correct series resitor on the mebrane panel. You can fit non 12V superbright replacements if you wish and they can be clear or diffuses (tinted) up to you and your preferences.
As for the Main Beam, do not replace this with a superbright type as you will need welders goggles to drive at night! The series resistor for the main beam bulb is far too low for a standard voltage LED and if you do decide to fit a LED then get a 12V type. Some peeps paint them to reduce the brightness. The correct High Beam LED Mod requires a resistor to be removed from the membrane PCB and replaced with a higher value, the LED also needs to be a 60mcd standard Diffused Blue and this will function at the correct 'tel tale' brightness.
if you cannot get a miniature bulb and no one offers an alternative then I have one (no charge!). PM me your address.............

On the left of each thread reply is an option to PM the poster. Just click on it and you will be able to send me your message/details. I have the correct miniature bulb if you want it and absolutely no charge but thanks for the offer. Alternatively, If you want to modify to a Blue LED for the main beam I can send you the details but I assume you want a standard miniature bulb which requires no mod but you will need to remove the dash to fit it. Not sure if the details are in the WIKI for replacing LEDs, bulbs and modding. If not may be I ought to do one.......

If the blue turns out too bright - dip it in black paint. Thats what I had to do

Re: dashboard LED's high beam etc
You need the miniature bulb. Fitting a Blue LED requires modification to operate at the correct 'tel tale' brightness. Sure the bulb is available but if not, you could try fitting a 12V 3mm white or blue LED (must be 12V type) in place of the current bulb and leave the blue insert in position to reduce the brightness. That should do the trick but never tried it.
Best suppliers are RS, Maplin, Rapid Online and CPC. One of these should have a 12V 3mm white or blue LED for a straightforward fit.
