Can someone tell me what this loom is?

Post by nesty »

I was installing twin square headlights today. I got there in the end. The O/S headlight-mounting frame fitted in fine. However the N/S one didn’t want to go in at all. Mainly because item 1 in the photo was preventing it fitting!

It is a loom of some kinda that goes up into the cockpit, though there was hardly any way of moving or getting slack in it. I trimmed the rubber boot to make it slightly thinner & get slight bit of slack. However took a bit of effort to get the O/S frame in and the headlight mounting frame is right up against the loom. I had to flex & bend the frame tabs a bit to make it fit, so not ideal!

Is it possible that the loom should have been put into item 2 (grommet) at the factory & this a factory build error, but never been discovered until attempting to fit twin headlights? If it had then the loom would of fit behind the frame ok, as then it would be sitting behind the more taped bit of the mounting frame.

Has anyone else had this problem when fitting Twin headlights frames? The frames are RHD and are genuine VW. The mounting frames are in though not looking forward to taking off O/S one in future to replace any bulbs.

Any information is appreciative.

that's the front lights loom in correct place, it is a fairly tight fit, is yours a pre 86 van ?

Yes mine is a 1984 Holdsworth model.

I just thought it wouldn't be that hard fitting it!

later vans probably have a bit extra in the loom to allow for the big lights option or may have moved the hole, never looked at the two shells side by side like.

If you carefully split the outer plastic sheath you will be able to bend the loom out of the way, you might have to unclip the bit of loom that runs along the front of the van.
I've fitted a set of square lights to my 83 van, if you need pics I can pop a light when it stops raining

I trimmed the outer boot a bit and it brought me some slack. I got the lights screwed in, just got to rivet the mounting plates in the morning. Then they all secure, though just before dark I realised I didn't put the sidelight holders so the light gota come off tommorrow again anyway
