morning all, heres todays issue...........
New engine (1.9 WBX DG code, 85 transporter).. out running in the eingine and occasionally my temp gague stopped working and went down to nowt. it would recover at any random time back up to a needles width past the light. I have all new sensors, re-done earths but not bled the rad properly (i think). any sudgetions??
Also. rad fan doesnt come on.. all new sensors, fan works as per haynhes manual test.. humph?

Radiator fan wont come on untill the temp guage gets to about 3/4.

May sound silly but have you checked the fuse? I had this problem once, thought it was sensor turned out to be fuse.
My temp gauge drops out sometimes. I reach under the dash wiggle to connector block and it comes back to life.

Skint - new guages may not read exactly the same as the old one.....
and remember, guage in cab is fed by sensor in engine bay, rad comes on as per the sensor in the rad. So if fan not coming on, and temp is way up, you MAY have an issue with water getting to the rad.
Try bleeding it some more. As you are doing this you should feel the rad getting warm. And then be confident that you have proper circulation.

Don't tell the folks you got the new engine off or you will void your warranty good style !!
Get it bled properly before you drive it again !!

Airlocks in these engines can cause serious "hot spots" that can do loads of (expensive) damage

If it still does it, it will likely be electrical connections near summat you recently moved.
If the Rad fan works when you manually kick it in and a new sensor has been fitted on the rad, chances are the rad has not yet got hot enough to kick it in (rad might be 1/2 full of air from what you said !!)
Be careful with it and let us know your findings

p.s. - put the heater on and use your left knee to monitor the hot air coming out (from the outlet by your left knee) - if it varies as you drive, you have airlocks, if it goes cold, stop and check the engine temp, driving with it blowing cold when it shouldn't be is playing Russian roulette with your new engine.

ok, just thought of something reading your thread again....
and, I may be wrong....
if you have an air lock....as the air bubble goes through the temp guage in engine....needle will fall, as will have no temp to register....then will climb back to halfway (which is ok) when water is back in the guage.
Does that make sense... sure I have read somewhere that the needle falling and rising intermittently can be a sign of poor bleeding.
Sure Ghost will tell you if I am wide of the mark!
Deffo get out there and bleed and bleed some more!
