Who owns which tyre brands?
The tyre industry is a confusing business. Historically there were the big 3 brands that people nearly always purchased but recently there have been a number of mergers and new budget brands sprouting.

We thought it would be useful to post a consolidated list of who owns who in the tyre industry (for our reference as much as yours!) so here is our handy list of the market.

Michelin - France
Worlds number one tyre manufacturer. Own the brands Michelin, BF Goodrich, Kleber, Uniroyal* and Riken.

As I said Michelin own BFG, your tyre man doesn't know his tyres.

He didn't deny that Michelin owned BFG - just told Clive that the discount only applied to Michelin branded products.

Mitchilen XZL (sometimes called O/R 4x4 in smaller sizes) is an excelent MT tyre if your looking for a 205R16 (same rolling size as a 235/70R16 but not pointlessly wide) - if you see an off road truck, chances are it'll have XZLs on it, if it doesn't it'll have XCL! Gotta be one of the hardest tyres on the planet.

Pritty sure its 205R16, 7.50R16 or 235/85R16 only outside of truck sizes (255/100R16 being the smallest of the truck sizes, a mate of mine has them on his 101 ambi when hes not running it on Unimog rims, which are also XZLs).

I think they drive fine on the road, I've been running a set on my Landy since the spring. Driven across some very muddy sites only in RWD and even if you really try to prevoke it its hard to get it slipping. Considdering I payed £40ea for them ex army with 11mm tread (new is 14mm) I don't think I'll be finding something better, if they are on offer its a good deal - a shame you need a 16in or mods to fit them or I'd probubly get some on my van.

Bearing in mind they have a 1970's Rover 2.25 diesel with K&N air filter and a Fariey overdrive to compete with I can't tell exactly how noisy they are, can hear a slight whine when I hang out the window, which probubly is slightly louder than the BFG MT colway copies I used to run but if your thinking of the howl the old army Goodyear Extra Grips made its absolutely no where near! In the wet they are very predictable and you have to be asking for it to get it to slide, simular to any other MT really.

As its pritty industrial the sidewalls are very tough, tread is slow wareing and load rating is high.
