16" Suspension Support Steel

Post by Yozza »

Ay up,

I've recently removed all the suspension, steering, drive train and sub-frame from the front of a 16" Doka for several reasons, one of them being I wanted a closer look at some nasty rust around the suspension supports, and it aint surface rust. See pics attached, the drivers side is worse. I'm currently considering two options:
1, Cut the rotten steel and replace, or
2, (Not sure how difficult/possible this is) remove the complete suspension subframe from the chassis and look at fitting another, on the face of it this looks like a difficult job drilling and grinding away the welds.
Has anyone else had to deal with this dilema? Any advice (preferably positive and constructive) would be appreciated.
Cheerz

The best option you have is to cut away the bad steel but leave the suspension supports in place. You will then need to slip the replacement steel in behind the spring support and weld in place. Use 2mm sheet to replace no thiner. This means you are not disturbing the vehicle geometry. There are also extra braising supports inside the chassi around this point.
This is not a job for a novice and would recommend getting a professional to do it but will cost as is very time consuming.
Hope that helps
