Gear Linkage

Post by samk »

mine loves to rattle - used to be just at high revs in 1st or 2nd but now also happens in 4th anywhere over 60/65ish. Had a quick look at it while it was up on the mechanics ramp and seems to be quite a bit of play in certain areas and a lit of room to shake about in the section where it goes above the petrol tank.

Where there bushes or something similar originally fitted to stop this happening? if so are there replacement kits? Had a quick gader at Brickwerks and JK but couldnt seem to see anything appropriate.

Thanks,

Sam

Hi, the bushes along the shaft probably need to be replaced. On Ebay as part of a kit, maybe still at VW, also JK and VW heritage. Dont bother with the Gearstick kit until you've done the bushes.
Its a pain re-aligning the gear selector afterwards, check the wiki.

Yeh get the bushes from JK or heritage, well worth doing. Gear stick kit makes a bit of difference but most of the play will be in the bushes.

There are a few other posts about this and how you do the rear bush without taking loads apart.

IF you undo the gearlinkage in the middle (on the UJ) make sure you mark it before or you will und up like me not being able to find any of your gears!!

thanks for the info guys. Seems a little above my abilities but i'll give it a go!

do you think it's possible to do without raising the van up? as someone once suggested parking with 2 wheels on the kerb gives a little more room :ok

6 ton axle stands from machine mart will provide as much space as any gravitationally challenged middle aged male (ie fat bloke) will require for access in safety and relative comfort ime
