Use the correct tool, its not dear, available form JK or I can let you borrow mine, don't take a chance on damaging the ring gear.

Re: Flywheel locking device
The proper tool does all the different flywheels in the 'type' VW range. Had mine years. It sits in two teeth and bolts through the engine casing. Have used screwdrivers before I bought it, but agree, less risk of tooth damage, particularly if you're undoing an excessively tight flywheel nut or something. Well worth having in the toolbox to be honest.

Re: Flywheel locking device
I usually shock stuff like that off by giving the spanner a sharp tap/thump so as to allow the inertia ofthe flywheel to do its stuff. Unless someone is going to tell me that the crankshaft is rivetted together or the whole thing is too fragile for that!

How odd .. I am in complete awe.

Having recently transplanted a 2.1 from a very tired but still going strong 1.9 at 135,000m all on the same gearbox.

Re: Flywheel locking device
Kev, I've got a locking tool, had it from my Aircooled Bay days.
