Starter solenoid

Post by very_bland »

Afternoon!

I previously thought the starter motor or solenoid was on its way out (Aircooled 2l) but Ive had a good look this morning and the cables going into the solenoid look like they might be the problem, all are in bad shape and one of the 2 red ones is hanging off.

Some times it doesn't even turn over let alone start (with a gentle tap on the solenoid it will start), sometimes it starts instantly on the first turn of the key. Considering a tap will get it going is it more likely that the wiring is just a hindrance to an already dying solenoid, it seems unlikely to me that it will make much difference to the wires.

I've tried GSF, and they don't sell wires, and can't find anywhere online. Anyone know where I can get them?

Thanks in advance.

You just replace the terminals - available in any motor accessory shop. Or am I stating the obvious here?

Yeah that would do it! Stating the obvious you may be, but having never dealt with electrics, it didn't cross my mind

Cheers

The nut on my solenoid was loose so I thought I would nip it up. Without any pressure I managed to snap the stud. :run

A threaded coupler and peice of stud later all fixed!

Unless you're under your vehicle a lot (and I quite like the solitude under there), the starter motor connections can be neglected. Its the small spade connector thats the usual culprit but a good connection for the thicker wire is very important too - as is a good earth. Bet you forgot to disconnect battery before prodding - we all do it at least once :D

Get familiar with it all under there though - nothing like familiarity and you'll be the first to spot any sign of trouble leading up to an MOT then too.

 No i disconnected the battery, I've not made that error so far. I've been having an explore underneath today, and there are a few bits that made me go  . There are two plates which have holes, where bolts should be connecting the two, and I found another bit of plate that was dangling, not fixed to anything, and I couldn't find where it came from. I shall photograph it tomorrow and put it on here. I also followed the wire I was talking about, and it leads to what I believe to be the alternator... now I wouldn't have thought that the absence of that wire would prevent the engine turning over would it? If it does, feel free to slap me and call me a silly boy (or something else of your own choice) ! Think I'm going to have to buy a new starter. :(

Even the most polished mechanic learnt by screwing up. I sure did. You won't make the same mistake twice - just new mistakes. :D

Bit like parenting.

Yup trial and error has worked for me so far, that and books with lots of pictures, like lego instructions  Mind you, saying that, my last car beat me. 1 feckin bolt I could not get off! 1 bolt that rendered the car useless!
