Just found a Thingy...

Post by Wolfsburg Willy »

in the space behind the n/s/r light. It's some kind of blower, taking air in through a corrugated hose which disappears up to the air intake with the snorkel, and it blows air into the errr... engine bay. :? It's very well fitted, nice bracket, relay an' all dem tings. AEG label and a VW part number. I've no idea what it's for, how it's switched on or in fact, what it's for. Any ideas? Couldn't see it before 'cos the air filter was in the way. Will post a piccy when the rain stops... it's possing down oop 'ere. :D

Yours is a TD Syncro?

In that case, congrats ...you've just discovered the auxiliary fan and ducting.
(it's supposed to blow cold air on the turbo if you switch it off and the engine is too hot, controlled by the same circuit which switches the aux water pump)

That's excellent Peasant! I suppose I need to sort some ducting out then, it's now an mTDi. The original ducting was probably removed when it was converted. Do you know where I might find a picture? Thanx Willy. :D

My advice would be to rip it out altogehter.

That thing only comes on when the engine is off and the temp sensor registers some 107 degrees water temperature. It then goes and blows some air at the presumably red hot turbo.
Anyone with a bit of cop-on would never get their engine into such a situation and if they did that little fan thingy would hardly make things better. It's more for moral support than anything else in my opinion.

Its all about heat soak isnt it? As in the turbo is going to get hotter when the engine turns off no matter how hot it is due to there being no oil being pumped through it.

Its there as a safe guard, an attempt to make the turbo last longer due to the jaunty angle that VW had to install it at. I doubt that VW would've bothered spending the money on installing them if they didn't think it was a good idea.

That said, i always leave my engine running for a while after ive stopped to try and help the turbo last a bit longer. Fan still comes on here and there though.

Always comes on if ive been offroading! Guess things tend to get quite hot under those circumstances, which is probably why it was the syncro's that got the fans...

If it was mine, id not go through the rigmarole of removing it and attach a bit of ducting to it and point it at the center housing on the turbo. (thats what i did, routed along the engine support bar)
