A few diesel engine questions if you dont mind

Post by jed the spread »

Right before i start bear with me because i know nothing about them.

My orange glowplug light comes back on after a bit although not fully just very dim. Is this normal? if not any ideas whats going on?

A new engine was in the van when i bought it although i am not sure what engine it is for sure yet. It had only done 200 miles when i bought it and the engine was fitted 2 years previously  so hadnt run in fully. I have now clocked up a few hundred miles and it now is worn in but are you suppose to get things tightened up or somthing next? I tryed to call the firm that did it but it looks like they have gone bust so they cant do owt.

If you look at this picture see were the injectors from the pump go into the ally head, (4 threaded holes) (this picture was nicked off the wiki so ignore the wrighting)

Image

The thing that go in them (connected to the ends of the pipes coming from the fuel pump) arnt sealing and what looks like deisel is bubbleing up between the ally head and the thing on the end of the pump pipes. You could almost wiggle one of them  Is there a copper washer or something to seal these? and if fuel is leaking down them would this then hit the glow plug wires and make the dash light glow?

And finally i ha ve noted my fly wheel cover is missing would this be making my clutch slip if a bit of fuel is seeping in there? Surly they would have put a new clutch on when the engine was out.

Think thats it for now Ta for reading

Jed , the head should be torque up , iirc 1/4 on all the head bolts ,but you need to do them in order and I've loaded my bentley to hulley.
You will need about a metre of diesel return pipe , then cut and replace each one , the one's between each injector should be the same length , also get a blank cap from the same shop for the last one.

Do all that and clean up all the connectors in the engine bay also have a look at the glow plug relay , and then see if the glow light is still dimly glowing , also get the cold start wiring up

ring us if ya get stuck

Personally i wouldnt torque the head up - but thats just me. Generally the first service on mid 90's engines was a few thousand miles wasnt it? Dunno if they re-torqued the head when doing that. I bet they just changed the oil.

Yes, the injectors do have special washers - GSF (or your bessie  ) sell them. If one of them is wobbling about (weird) then tighten it up with a special socket and see if that fixes the leak. More often than not, as Mark is hinting at, the return hoses leak and thats the problem. However, injectors arent supposed to wobble. Dunno about the torque - check the wiki.

The glow plug light is a separate issue - Follow Marks advice. check the relay and ensure the connections are clean. Its in the black box at the back of the engine bay (next to your charge cooler). Again, GSF do the relays but i'm not sure about the quality.

You know my number.....

Thanks fellas, i did the fuel return pipe this afternoon because i thought the fuel was leaking from them. Thats when i noticed this wasnt the problem, and to make things abit more panicky the one way vlve on the water cap on the header tank did its nuts again and water was backing up to the expansion tank. Any ideas were i can get the tool to tighten the injectors up with? wonder if GSF do them...

Peter russek manual said torque up after 600 miles. But as Ringo said i bet on the first service on mid 90s engines it wasnt done .Tomorrow i will be fitting a recon head to a 1Y engine so its torque up for the new streech bolts 1/4 turns very relevent.Oh the injectors will be refitted with the special tool .

I was given a Peter Russek manual a few years ago, I've been meaning to scan it in but I've not known anyone with one of those feeder scanners (like a photocopier). I'll have to pull my finger out and get it scanned for ya Jed.

As Billy sez - 27mm deep socket, cost about £5-£10
