my temp guage didn't work for the first two years and has for the last two years it stays just under the end of the guage between 3/4 and 4/4.
The fan comes on if I am idling for a few minutes after a long journey, I think I felt more comfortable without a gauge at all.
and by the way when you flushed the coolant you have definitely bled all the air out havn't you? otherwise you may find you start blowing caps or even worse splitting the expansion tank.

I spent a while making sure it's all out! Just gonna keep an eye on it now and see if it needs any topping up.
Cheers!
