Power steering

Hi
Englishman living in Switzerland who's got the t3 syncro bug needs advice! I've recently bought a syncro 2.1l wbx SR '89 with no power steering and after fitting 15" 7J wheels I've realised what a wonderful invention this was!!! How difficult are they to fit and what should i look out for when buying a secondhand rack? Are they the same for diesel/petrol,2wd/4wd???

There is an electric option that has been developed for t3s. I will try and find alink for you over the weekend. It replaces the top half of the colium and only works up to 10mph and the turns off above that speed. In realty power stering would only be used below those speeds. It costs about£ 400. Compared to around £600 for asecond hand rack pump and pipes.

Finding a LHD rack will be far easier and cheaper than RHD... but you need the hub carriers as well..

I sourced a complete 2nd hand original set up for our LHD syncro and it made a huge difference, so much nicer to drive around town etc. We ended up paying 400 pounds for the complete set up, I then payed another 120 pounds for new rubber front to back hoses as I did not want to use the 20yr old rusty pipes.

It is really not a hard job to fit all the bits as they were designed with and without power steering.

Have just fitted power steering to my Syncro....long job....not the easiest but well worth it. Bought the whole system (LHD) for £380 inc pipes from Malvern BVF. BUT had to send the rack to 'TRANSHOCK' in Birmingham to recondition the rack who actually did it under warranty!!!! Fantastic company!!!! They even sent it back to me at their expence and fitted new gaters on it for free. Cant praise them enough.
Would def try them for a rack if you cant find one.

Also... forgot to say that when buying beware.....the replacement steering column which attaches to the universal joint is shorter on a Syncro compared to a 2WD van. Well it was on mine anyway.

You dont have to change the uprights. (they are slightly different but not necesary to change)
LHD and RHD drag links are different lengths not 2WD to syncro.

Summary: I need a complete set up incl. pump and pipes if they're not too rusty, taken out of a 2.1l petrol syncro (does it matter if it's SR, SS, or MV? mines a SR).

Or: I can overinflate tyres, not a good idea here in Switzerland in winter !

Or: Electric motor option. This one is tempting, has anyone taken one out of a Corsa and fitted it onto/into a T25/T3??

You may want to speak to Richard Jones AKA RJES as his electric power steering is almost in production.

Give him a ring, you could have one of the first production models.

Looks very simple and easy to install!
