Propox Heater

Post by holeydub on 4wheels »

Hey,

Been hunting on fleabay this evening for wedge bits and pieces and fell apon a Red Propex Heater. Ive spoken to the owner and said he'd take £200 for it. Its still in good working order and comes with everything except the gas pipe and bottle. Im just wondering what the set up is like to install and use? Can it be installed under the r&r bed or is it an engine bay thing? Can it only be used stationary with the gas bottle outside? Is it Butane or Propane?
You can probably guess that i have no idea about these all i know is that they are another alterative to the eberaspatcher system...

If anyones got some pics or a diagrame of an install that would really help to make my mind up, as i really would like to be able to go away in the winter months.

:ok

My propex heater is in the main van area, to the left of the fridge. Kind of behind the driver's seat. It runs off the same gas bottle that I use for the fridge. The gas bottle is inside a cupboard. I would only use it when stationary, but the bottle doesn't need to be outside. Not sure if its propane or butane.......I think the bottle's orange. :?

Will run on butane or propane. For winter camping, propane is better.
Can be fitted under r&r bed possibly, or in one of your units like binka describes, not in the engine bay though.
Propex heaters have an exhaust pipe (for dangerous fumes) so you'll need to cut a hole in the side of your van for that. Also has another pipe for air intake.
As well as a gas supply it needs a 12v supply from a leisure battery.

They're great heaters but if you don't have enough juice in your leisure battery, or enough gas in the bottle, they won't work (obviously).

There's loads of previous posts on here about propex heaters, try the search facility and limit it to the camping forum or the tech forum.

cheers guys, the only issues i hve is that i dont have any cupboards to store the bottle as i only a full width westy rock and roll bed. The way mine is set out is that there could be room on the sliding door side of the bed would it be ok to put the exhaust vent on that side due to the door being there?

My propex has both the fresh air to the burner inlet pipe and exhaust gases outlet pipe going through the floor of the van. There's not much alternative to be honest as on mine the inlet and outlets are in the base of the unit itself.

It was already installed in the van. Having said that, I had to remove it when I was refurbishing the interior and it was 'simples'. I don't know, but would guess that installing one from scratch would be fairly straightforward - just a case of running cables, gas pipe and fitting to the floor.
