1.9 petrol initial start-up problems.

Post by l.wildish »

Hi, new to this so please excuse if this is a bit rambling but I'm having a problem with my '84 1.9 petrol Westfalia camper and wondered if anyone could help?!

My van has recently been MOT'd and serviced and has had the fuel tank/filters replaced and carb cleaned out. I've used the van 3 or 4 times in the last 2 weeks with no problems.
However we drove the van this week from Kent to Yeovil stopping over night. Here's where my problem starts. The van will start in the morning and run for 30 seconds+ before cutting out. The only way I can restart it is by unattaching the hose from the fuel pipe to the carb and creating a vacuum with my thumb until the fuel comes through. I can then reattach the hose and start the engine. It will then run faultlessly allday ,stop starting, sitting in traffic etc. without ever cutting out. It has been left for over 3 hours whislt we were busy site seeing again starting with no problems and driving another couple of hundred miles back to kent only for the same thing to happen again thismorning. Had this problem before the service and hoped it had been cured. Wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to keep unloading the bike rack and boot each time!!

I would suspect the fuel pump is at fault or the pushrod under the pump has worn but would put the pump at the top of the list.

Yeah, finding that with all the bits that break on mine! Can get a new one from VW Heritage I think although they're back order at the moment. Just wondered if I could find one cheaper.
