Sounds like the switch on the master cyclinder or a wire chafing against the body. Better to trace the cause than compensate for it.

I thought the ignition needed to be on for the brake lights to work anyway.....

Easy one to diagnose:
remove the dash binnacle (5 second job) remove the 4 screws retaining the instrument cluster, speedo cable/plugs etc to gain access to the brake light switch. When the lights stick ON you can then carefully pull off one of the spade connections on the switch...if the brake lights go out it proves the switch is faulty and needs changing.
