Convert single round to twin square headlight

Post by Cruz »

Got an opportunity to buy a twin round headlight grill with inner lamps. Is it a difficult mod to perform? Anyone got a guide?

Mines an early van by the way

It's a simple mod, will take a couple of hours max. You will have to mark and drill the new holes for the inner spots . Use the new grill to get the spot postion just right , measure and check a few times before drilling and then they can be wired up to your existing full beam circuit. Job done

As I was dealing with a 3rd party at work they have ended up being RHD square headlights plus the inners and grill

What a bugger

Any tips on fitting?

Got the RHD square lights with looms and grill for £75 8) . Got the extra fixing brackets for the bottom mounting and renewed the battered lens adjustment screws so I'm ready to rumble.

My drivers sidelight bulb went so I used the opportunity to see how the square light will fit only to find that the inner round headlight grill mounting is in the way.

I assume I need to remove the two inner grill securing tabs from the bodywork as the square grill secures itself to the lamp backplates making the inner tabs redundant?

Are they spot welded? If so I could drill them out and fit them back on with rivets if I ever (took leave of my senses) needed to go back to round headlights?

Additionally the back of the inner spot seemed to foul on the bulkhead bulge, the one that's only on the drivers side. I assume this is because of the original grill mounts being in the way?

Thanks in advance :D

Cheers all. Got them fitted. Bent the round grill retainers back, instead of chopping, for future use and fitted the new lights with the correct riveted VW mounting plate :ok

With all this interest in converting round to square, I suspect round ones will become more sought-after in he fullness of time. :D
