engine loses power

Post by skint-van-man »

Hi all,

Finally fitted and started my re-built 1.9 waterboxer and got it ideling an about 1000, if i go near the accelerator the engine just dies. Is this a timing or a carb issue? Spent a day on it now with no luck!

I have the timing set up at 1000rpm and mark is on crankcase split... this is the vac advance pipes ON. should they be on or off?

There isnt an excessive smell of petrol from exhaust... ive cleaned small cone filter in carb and replaced main fuel filter.

Searched through so so many past posts and nothing seems to help much so anyhelp apprechiated! :D

Almost certainly muck in a carb jet, or an airleak between carb and manifold.

You can get at the jets after removing the top off the carb.

Look in your Haynes for a breakdown of which one is which.

Don't poke through them with anything like bits of wire.

An airline or similar is favourite.

When testing to see if you have done any good, put the airfilter back on, all be it temp, as it affects the "suck" on the jets.

Timing on a DG / DF engine is done with the vac hoses off.

Note some engines have an "ignition stabiliser" box, next to the usual electronic ignition module by the coil. If you have one of these, you are supposed to take the 2 round plugs off it and connect them together whilst checking the timing.

Remember though, imho, yours is not a timing issue :)

ghost123uk always coming up tops!

Took top off carb and managed to break the gasket with my fat fingers and then it had an even worse air leak so carb kept flooding. will remove and clean carb and update when complete!
