Just seen this thread, and couldn't help adding my own idea... Two "camping lights" from Poundland, normally requiring 4xAA batteries in series (which is 6v each) wired together in series to the 12v van supply. Throw away the battery cases and fix each to a suitable disk (I used ply, but they're so light cardboard would probably do). Makes for a really bright interior for almost no power drain. Trial (as per pic) worked a charm, so we'll be making another pair soon and rigging the lot up properly, with better concealed wiring, to the courtesy light switch.

They are, of course, rubbish at giving a) atmosphere (being 'orribly white and very directional) and b) spotlight for reading, so will still need other lights for that. But they do light up the interior fantastically...!
