probably same as if it were one of ours, knackered pinion bearing and/or mainshaft bearing, and worn synchroniser, age, wear, lack of oil changes, unless it's a new scirrocco then it's vw warranty problem

oh yeah I forgot they used the name again :D

OK Aiden
second hand box then
would that be a fairly generic box on a 1.8i VW transverse?

Basically you will be able to use most 'rod change' boxes from late '70s mk1 golf up to about 95 some mk3 golf’s- but you will want to match the ratios.

It’s been ages since I have done this (since I built my 16v Scirocco infact) but I believe that you will be best with a box from and injected 8v including the golf mk2 gti. The mk2 golf 16v box is an option with slightly longer 5th i think but there is a change of the input shaft being a larger number of splines.
Anyway stay away from the Scirocco GTII boxes as they are short ratio and it will rev like a bugger at motorway speed. and don’t go for a box from a 1.6 scirocco otherwise known as the 4+E box as these are for economy and don’t really suit the injected car (better on a 8v than 16v however but will make both seem slow to rev and cripple a 16v i know this from experience  )

Any questions give me a PM :D

That's a shame, I have one here as a spare. :|

Dont get me wrong they are a good box for quick runs and really make the car feel faster/revier but IIRC they are like 4k at 70 which is a bit annoying on a run.

I have to say that our GTII is sweet enough on the motorway at legal(ish) speeds.

I used to have a gorgeous GTX too [sob] [sob] and whilst it was a bit longer in the leg, it was not enough difference to put me off a GTII box if one was readily available at the right price.

Just my humble opinion of course and not necessarily the views of others (as always  )

Just tested our Scala injection on Monday, straight through 8) So in the interests of keeping the car going and saving The Bus a bit I've come to work in it today :P I LOVE Sciroccos ... it makes all the right noises  and a gentle touch on the GO pedal left an Audi rep mobile

Gill and I love them too :)

We have a nice K plate GTII ( on a carb though )

Did I mention I used to have a gorgeous black GTX [sob] [sob]

On the Scirocco forum we often muse over what other car you could buy, for a similar price, that can offer comparable ->

Performance
Reliability
Driver satisfaction
Handling
Looks
Ease of getting spares

And you can get a really nice one for less that £1000 ( I know because I sold a gorgeous GTX (did I mention that before) for £800 :? )

The only car I can think of in the same light might be an early Opal Manta...

I had my "Sky Rocket" for almost exactly 10 years and it never ever broke down and the only parts I changed on it were normal service items, the biggest of which was a clutch (diy)

Tip = Stick to genuine German exhaust systems :ok
The cheaper ones sound shyte and wreck performance.
The "big bore" ones spoil the torque at lower RPM
