Uh oh, my van doesn't sound right......gearbox?

Post by Damien »

Since putting my van up for sale, she's started to protest a bit. Firstly, she refused to go above 35, 3 month old "pooh" HT leads keep working loose at annoying intervals! (where can i get good ones from?). Then noticed a slight leak of oil.

Just popped down to morrisons to get some bits and got there ok, came to leave and me van sounds like a formula 1 car in second and third. First and 4 are fine. Drove as it does normally, no loss of power or anything. What could it be?

Just limped home in first and second, gearbox is more than likely shot, 3rd and 4th kept grinding and refusing to stay in gear.

Damien,

you will need a new bell housing gasket, and some gear box oil.

Well, managed to get the gearbox off the van, took clutch off and spigot bearing feels ok. Went to drain oil and very little came out, so removed bellhousing and selector end. Oil came out everywhere, seems it has been apart before and a lot of hylomar has been used in place of gaskets blocking the sump plup hole off. The main bearing is shot, plastic retainer is in 2 bits, 3 bearings have fallen out and the others are sat in the bottom of the cage doing very little.

Think it will be ok with other box. But after a bit of falling about i got the input shaft off to find the thread in the end is stripped, hopefully my mate will be able to rethread it and make up another stud tomorrow.
