a bit of help please

Post by hippy chick »

Driving home lastnight and the batt light came on, then i got an electrical burning smell  fire i thought opened the engine bay, nothing just the smell of burning, also could smell it in the cab, when i start her she starts fine but the light stays on if i rev then the light fades but does not go out completley. Then after a while i get the smell again, could it be the altenator i do get a screeching noise now and again. Did look at the fan belt but it seems fine. Oh sorry its an 1915cc watercooled caravelle 1985. many thanks jen

That's the 'fan' (alternator drive) belt slipping ... it's slightly loose and will look shiney on the undersides. Get it changed and tensioned correctly by someone who know's what they're doing. :ok

if it's screeching then it's not fitted correctly,it will smell as well as the pulleys are spinning faster than the belt and rubbing it.i would fit a new belt just in case it is worn. :ok
