Do you have heating? I have had a propex in my last van and a Truma in my current van and they are the dogs "Balls". They keep the Westy pop top warm in just about any condition. I was in near freezing with the Truma on the mid setting (temperature wise) and it would switch on and off every now and then. The heat didn't last long in the roof as the canvas sides don't offer much in insulation but it was fine. The boys didn't complain. In fact I had to back it off a bit as the downstairs was a bit to warm. I had considered getting the insulated sides for westy canvas but have decided against it because of 2 reasons. One it is more crap to carry and two it is rare that I think I might need it.
The other nice thing about the heater is that in the winter you switch it on whilst your out and about and come back to a nice toasty van rather than have to wait for a the engine to warm before you get warm. My van goes to my sons football games in the winter and it is good to have the heater on when he comes off wet and cold.
The amount of money you'd spend in time and materials modifying a pop top or replacing the roof would buy a propex or very nearly. Just remember though a Propex won't work on Butane in the cold. So you'll also have to change your bottle over to propane.
