Splutter chug chug....HELP!
Symptoms: Engine (watercooled 1.9) starts.Red battery light comes on. Van stalls. Van drives briefly.Van stalls.Red battery light appears. This happens until van has warmed up. Jerky acceleration. The van will then run, but when idle sounds spluttery and sluggish.Doesn't pick up well in gear. Engine/bay wobbling more than usual. Does any of that make sense? And can anyone cure the symptoms? Van has just had winter service and sounded smooth and great before. Could it be exhaust trouble? Help!

Go over what was done on the winter service, if it was fine beforehand! I take it plugs and leads were changed, that would be first on my list. Mine wobbled a lot, got quite worried did a compression test and all was fine, turned out to be 2 HT leads didn't fit into the dizzy cap properly.

Hi
It sounded great AFTER the service. The van had a great inspection with service and nothing was found. This sounds like a new problem. Although...isn't it always the case that gremlins always appear everytime a van/car go in for work at a garage? Typical!

Doesn't sound like choke as you still have problems once warmed up. I'd suspect an air leak; search the forum for posts on this. There is a case study on my own van in the Wiki.

Thanks all. Will get hands dirty tomorrow weather permitting. I'm not mechanically minded but i think that i'm headed that way! I did buy the van with the intention of pottering and fiddling in mind as well as camping.Cheers.
